How to Watch The U (WCIU 26) For Free & Without Cable

Last updated: June 15, 2026

WCIU is the Chicago independent that refuses to disappear. Owned by locally based Weigel Broadcasting, the same company behind MeTV, channel 26 has branded itself as "The U" for decades. It carried The CW from 2019 until 2024, but when Nexstar moved that affiliation over to WGN 9, WCIU went right back to being a true independent, leaning on local programming, classic shows, and the WNBA's Chicago Sky. That independence is the whole point: there's stuff here you won't find on a national feed. It's free over the air on channel 26, and it's slowly being added to the live TV streamers, Fubo picked up Weigel's stations in 2025. If you've cut the cord and you miss the oddball local channel that plays what it wants, this is it.

Watching The U With an Antenna

WCIU broadcasts free over the air on channel 26 from downtown Chicago. Reception is solid across the metro with a standard antenna, and since most of what airs here is local and independent, the antenna is genuinely the main way people watch it.

Chicago is about as easy as over-the-air TV gets. Almost every full-power station transmits from a single cluster downtown, most of it off the Willis Tower, and the land around the city is famously flat. Point a basic antenna toward the Loop and you will usually pull in the major networks without much trouble. The signal thins out as you push past the collar counties toward the Wisconsin and Indiana lines, where an amplified or outdoor antenna starts to matter.

Most Chicago stations transmit from the Willis Tower antenna farm downtown (marked). Basemap © OpenStreetMap contributors via Wikimedia. Check your exact address on the FCC reception map.
