Here’s the deal: ESPN has the rights to so many leagues and sporting events that it simply cannot feature them all in a single channel. The answer, for them, has been to create overflow channels like ESPN2 and ESPNU, and a dedicated streaming service, ESPN+. So where does ESPN3 fit in all this?
Somewhere in the middle, I would say. ESPN3 is a digital channel accessible only online, but you still need a live TV streaming subscription to access the plethora of sports events it features.
There are two ways to access ESPN3 for free. The first is available to students and the military—if you use your dedicated emails (.edu for the former and .mil for the latter), you can actually access the channel at no extra cost, regardless of what provider you have.
The second is to use a free trial provided by an affiliated live TV provider, like the ones we’ve listed below. With a free trial, you can use your credentials to unlock ESPN3 videos. Just remember: trials vary in length by service, so make sure you cancel before the trial ends. Otherwise, you’re charged the regular monthly fee. You can read more about these live TV services and the other channels they feature below.

Sling TV is a relatively affordable and wide-ranging live TV streaming service that has three main plans: the family-friendly Sling Orange, the sports-and-news-focused Sling Blue, and the comprehensive Sling Orange + Blue. The latter has a total of 46 channels, including IFC, TNT, and MGM, plus cloud DVR and simultaneous streams. You can also add multiple add-ons, like the Sports Extra, the News Extra, and the International Extra, to enhance your base package.
