By The Spool Editors · Published September 17, 2026 · Updated October 7, 2026

If you have been a Philo subscriber for a while, you are probably on a plan Philo no longer sells, and you may have had an email telling you the price is moving. Meanwhile the plan called Core has been retired and replaced by Essential and Bundle+. Here is what each one is, what it costs today, and whether staying put is actually the cheaper move.

Which One Is Right for You

Best if you record a lot
Essential or Bundle+
A one-year DVR instead of 30 days. On the legacy plan, anything you saved a month ago is already gone.
Best if you pay for HBO Max separately
Bundle+
HBO Max with ads, AMC+ and discovery+ are folded in for $8 more than Essential, which is less than HBO Max costs alone.
Best if you only watch a few channels
Legacy
Nothing forces you to move while your account is still on it, and the core lifestyle lineup is the same.
Best for spending nothing
Philo free channels
Philo now has a free ad-supported tier with no card required. Worth checking before you renew anything.

The Plans That Actually Compete

Price Breakdown & Hike History

Both sides land at $25 once Philo finishes moving legacy accounts across, which is the whole point: the legacy plan is not cheaper any more, it is just smaller. Bundle+ at $33 is the only price on this page that buys something new.

Philo Legacy: Philo is repricing legacy 30-day-DVR accounts to $25 a month, with exact timing varying by account and notified by email or SMS.

Philo (Essential & Bundle+): Philo went from $20 to $25 in 2024, ran a $28 Core tier through 2025, and now sells Essential at $25 and Bundle+ at $33.

What You Actually Get

The legacy plan carries 110 or so live and free channels with a 30-day DVR. Essential carries 200 or more live and free channels with a one-year unlimited DVR and 75,000 on-demand titles. Bundle+ adds HBO Max with ads, AMC+ and discovery+ on top of that. Neither side has sports or local stations, which has always been the trade Philo asks you to make.

The Timing Nobody Tells You About

Philo is not moving every legacy account on the same day. The exact timing varies by account and you get an email or SMS first, so check the date on your notice before you decide anything. Switching early gains you the bigger DVR sooner, and waiting costs you nothing until your own date lands.

Add-Ons & Hidden Costs

Philo Legacy add-ons: HBO Max, STARZ, and MGM+. Legacy accounts can still stack the same premium add-ons, they just do not get the bundled apps.

Philo (Essential & Bundle+) add-ons: HBO Max, STARZ, MGM+, and Movie and lifestyle packs. Bundle+ is itself the add-on play: three services folded in for $8 over Essential.

How to Try Each One Free

Philo runs a 7-day free trial on its current plans. Legacy accounts cannot start one, since the plan is closed to new and returning customers. If you cancel and come back later, you cannot get the legacy plan again, so do not cancel to test something.

The Cheapest Way to Get What You Want

Start with Philo free channels and see whether you miss anything. If you record shows, Essential at $25 is the floor worth paying. Only go to Bundle+ if you already pay for at least one of HBO Max, AMC+ or discovery+, in which case it is cheaper than what you have now.

What Changed Recently

Philo Legacy vs Philo (Essential & Bundle+) FAQ

What happened to the Philo Core plan?
Core was Philo's middle tier through 2025 and has been retired. The current paid plans are Essential at $25 a month and Bundle+ at $33 a month, plus a free ad-supported tier.
Is the Philo legacy plan cheaper?
Not once the change lands on your account. Philo is moving legacy 30-day-DVR accounts to $25 a month, which is the same price as Essential, but with fewer channels and a much shorter DVR window.
Can I go back to the legacy plan if I switch?
No. The legacy package is not available to new or returning customers, so once you move off it or cancel, it is gone for good.
What does Bundle+ include that Essential does not?
HBO Max with ads, AMC+ and discovery+, plus an expanded on-demand library. Philo puts the value of those apps bought separately at around $22 a month against the $8 difference in price.

Philo Legacy vs Philo (Essential & Bundle+): The Verdict

There is no version of this where the legacy plan stays a bargain. Once Philo moves your account to $25, you are paying Essential money for a smaller channel list and a 30-day DVR instead of a year. If you only watch a handful of lifestyle channels and never record anything, staying put costs you nothing extra, but it buys you nothing either. If you use any of HBO Max, AMC+ or discovery+ already, Bundle+ at $33 replaces roughly $22 a month of separate subscriptions, which is the only tier here that genuinely changes your bill. Core, the tier that sat between them, no longer exists.
