It’s not easy being a teenager. It’s especially not easy being a teenager like the titular protagonist of Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken. As that title would suggest, Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is a Kraken living in a seaside town with her family. Her parents and younger brother seem to have no trouble assimilating to the broader world, while Ruby struggles. All she wants is to blend in as a normal human-- albeit one with blue skin and no spine. Wendell & Wild
I didn’t realize watching Wendell and Wild how much I’d missed Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele bouncing off one another. Though restricted to just voice-over performances here, their incredible chemistry remains intact. The moment their demonic characters started exchanging dialogue, I felt like I was right back in 2014, watching sketches like “Gremlins 2 brainstorm” or “Fronthand Backhand” on YouTube, in awe of the witty rapport these performers shared. Between the release of a documentary celebrating her long and amazing career and her scene-stealing supporting turn in Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story, Rita Moreno definitely had a 2021 for the pop culture ages. Alas, that undeniably welcome career resurgence hits a major hurdle in The Prank, an unspeakably lame mystery-comedy-horror hybrid that director Maureen Bharoocha seemingly devised to answer the question, “What if we took Teaching Mrs. Tingle but made it even stupider?” The result may not be the single worst film in this year’s somewhat lackluster SXSW lineup, but it’s close.
