His backstage drama about a fake sketch show pleased no one. When he tried to course correct with The Newsroom he tried to portray the American news media out to be brave warriors for the cause of truth. Much of the pre-release buzz about AppleTV+’s new original series Extrapolations was concerned with its potential to be preachy. In much the same way this writer doesn’t mind a bit of emotional manipulation in entertainment, I can be fine with preachiness. Some things are worth preaching about. The news that Apple TV+ would shell out top dollar for a limited series based on Min Jin Lee’s family epic, the 2017 novel Pachinko, was generally well-received by fans of the book. With book to small screen adaptations like Station Eleven and My Brilliant Friend growing both increasingly common, and popular, it seemed like a natural fit for the sprawling story of a Korean family displaced by the Japanese occupation of their homeland during the 20th century.
