While on first impression it sounds like a hit-or-miss fictional action series, Mafia Spies is actually a docuseries about the real life effort by the CIA and the Chicago mafia to assassinate former Cuban leader Fidel Castro. It features interviews with experts, real life footage, as well as reenactments in a wild story involving CIA agents, hitmen, and a state-sanctioned assassination—an espionage, murder mystery, and historical documentary wrapped in one.

Inspiration behind Mafia Spies
The limited series is based on the book Mafia Spies: The Inside Story of the CIA, Gangsters, JFK, and Castro by Thomas Maier. Maier would write from his fascination with this being USA’s first state-sanctioned assassination attempt, the dynamic between the Chicago mobsters, and the rippling effects of a Castro leadership still felt to this day.
