While best known for her acting, Natalie Portman has never starred in a television show outside of the occasional Saturday Night Live appearance… until now. Portman partners with fellow Israeli-American filmmaker Alma Har’el for the Lady in the Lake, a crime drama based on the bestselling 2019 novel of the same name.

The miniseries focuses on Portman’s character Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish woman who ditches her home life to become an investigative journalist. She stumbles upon two murders– 11-year-old Tessie Durst and African-American activist Cleo Sherwood– and hopes to solve both for a spot at the local newspaper.

Apple TV+ is an ad-free and on-demand streaming service whose library may seem small compared to other streamers, but you can be sure that every single title it has is produced in-house. This covers critically acclaimed films like Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as dramas, sitcoms, kids' shows, and more recently, Friday Night Baseball. It costs $9.99/month and can be played on most devices except Android phones and tablets.

Is Lady in the Lake based on the novel or the movie?

Lady in the Lake is based on the bestselling 2019 novel by Laura Lippman. It’s not related to the 1947 noir film starring Robert Montgomery, though coincidentally, both are murder mysteries investigated by aspiring writers.
