From Lady Bird and Everything, Everywhere All At Once to Turning Red and Brave, it seems like recent cinema has been leaning pretty heavily on the tense, complex, and beautiful bond between mothers and daughters. And it’s not hard to see why: there’s plenty to mine from that rich love-hate relationship. There’s heart as well as laughs, and anger as well as passion.
The new Brazilian drama A História Delas (Their Story) ups the ante by placing a pair of mothers and daughters from wildly different backgrounds under one roof. In particular, the series follows business owner Marta (Cris Vianna) and her daughter Jasmim (Emma Araujo) as they reluctantly shelter Marta’s former employer Isabel (Letícia Spiller) and her daughter (Bia Arantes) after a court order places them under house arrest. Isabel was Marta’s boss during her stint as a nanny, so this table-turn of events, coupled with secrets, past intrigues, and class disparity sounds like a recipe for drama that’s equal parts scathing and heartwarming.
