One of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's earliest pieces of marketing was a trailer-by-way-of-behind-the-scenes featurette. In that clip, Tom Cruise, strapped to a motorcycle, rockets off the edge of a cliff in the Swiss Alps. He lets the bike drop away before popping his parachute and sailing into the horizon. It's one of the most death-defying sequences ever captured on film and, as we now know, it's one Cruise himself did again and again and again. The sequence, even devoid of context, sums up exactly what director Chris McQuarrie and Cruise (the two are also co-producers) hoped to achieve in Dead Reckoning: grade A movie spectacle. Nothing better encapsulates the derivative nature of Kay Cannon’s Cinderella than the presence of a trio of comic relief mice (played by Romesh Ranganathan, James Acaster, and, sigh, James Corden). These rodents were not a part of the original Cinderella story; the concept of this lady hanging out with talking mice came about solely due to the 1950 Disney cartoon. Why, then, is this new Cinderella, hailing from Sony Pictures and being released by Amazon, cribbing something from Disney? On Christmas Day in 1831, tens of thousands of slaves in Jamaica rebelled against their masters, burning acres and acres of sugar cane. By the end of the first week of January, the rebellion had been brutally quashed by Britain. But from that point on, it was clear that the days of slavery in the colonies were coming to an end. In 1833, that’s exactly what happened. The Long Song tells the story of July (Tamara Lawrance), a slave woman who lives through this transitory period as the primary maid to Caroline Mortimer (Hayley Atwell), the mistress of the plantation.
